What is the Meaning of Ethical Fashion?

Hello everyone!

I'm excited to share my new post about #EthicalFashion. Many of my friends and people in general ask me the same questions: Isn't ethical a harsh word? Is ethical fashion a thing? What is the meaning of ethical fashion?

Side note: I would also suggest watching the documentary, The True Cost Movie, for more inspiration!

OK moving on, many of those questions come up when someone opens the door to speak about sustainable living within the fashion industry. So I thought, well OK, let’s break this down for everyone and hopefully get you to think about it too! :)

When reading Ethical Fashion Forum (EFF) standards I thought they have the perfect concept of "ETHICAL FASHION." It represents an approach to the design, sourcing and manufacturing of clothing which maximizes benefits to people and communities while minimizing impact on the environment.

Now, if you go to the dictionary the definition of ethical is: of or relating to moral principles, morally good or correct, avoiding activities or organizations that do harm to people or the environment.

For the EFF and the fashion industry, the meaning of ethical goes beyond avoiding harm, it is taking an approach which strives to take an active role in poverty reduction, sustainable livelihood creation, minimizing and counteracting environmental concerns. Therefore, ethical fashion is the way the industry works towards a sustainable living.

These images come from current outsourcing companies that use sweatshops, where children under age work daily to support their families instead of going to school. Sad stories like these are a reality and daily threat for every mother, father and child who lives under these conditions. If you are reading this, ask yourself: who made your clothes? In a 2016 advanced global society, modern slavery still exist, and unfortunately 89% of the population doesn't realize that they are contributing to it!

Now that you have read this, are you ready to shop ethically? You have the power to change the game and make a positive impact on the world! Stay tuned and read our next blog post to find out how!
